Saugus, located about 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles, encompassing 46.7 square miles of the approximately 200-square mile Santa Clarita Valley. Saugus, part of the City of Santa Clarita, is the largest in geographic size within Los Angeles County. Saugus is located near the Sierra Pelona Mountain range, the Santa Susanna, and the San Gabriel Mountain ranges.  Saugus is easily accessible by Interstate 5 and Califonia State Highway 14. Canyon country is located between Saugus and Lancaster along California State Highway 14. Newhall is located at the southern most point in the group of Santa Clarita communities, where the Highway 14 joins Interstate 5 just north of the pass that leads to the San Fernando Valley and the reas of the City of Los Angeles.

Community

Saugus, Canyon Country and Newhall are all part of Santa Clarita city, the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County based on the 2000 Census with a population of 151,088 people. In 2002, the City of Santa Clarita remains the fourth largest city in the county and the 24th largest city in the State of California.  Consequently, the city plays an important role in the county based on its size.

Weather

Saugus Newhall and Canyon Country all quite distinct climates, Canyon Country being higher in altitude generally gets more snow, while Newhall rests in the cool convergence of Bouquet Canyon and a few others an a much nower altitue rarely get any snow at all. The three areas however, enjoy a mild Southern California climate. Summer is usually dry and warm in the 75° - 100° range while Winters are usually temperate and semimoist, mostly in the 40° - 65° range. Saugus gets around 15 to 18 inches of rain, primarily between November and March.

Saugus Homes

According to the 2000 Census, there are a total of 52,442 housing unites within the city limit.  About 97% of the units in Saugus are occupied.  Unlike statewide average, 75% of Saugus housing units are owners occupied compare to the 45% seen elsewhere.

Employment

Saugus enjoys a lower unemployment rate compare to other city its side within Los Angeles county.  According to recent census data, unemployment rate in Saugus is at 3.1%, 50% lower than neighboring cities.  More than one third of the city's employment is in the services sector.  Retails and trade come in second at 18%.  Some of the largest employers in Saugus are Six Flags Magic Mountain, Saugus Union School District, and the United Postal Service.

Transportation

While 3% of the total population are working at home, the majority of Saugus residents travel on an average of 33 minutes to work.  Public transportation increased over 450% over the last decade.  Peak traffic time starts at 6:00 am and clear up at 8:00am on weekdays.

Education

Schools in Saugus rank consistently among the top 10% in California.  There are a total of 13 schools in Saugus with the total enrollment of just over 9000 students.  The students to computer ratio in all of the Saugus schools is 7 to 1.  California Institute of the Arts, California State University in Northridge, the Masters' College, and the College of the Canyons are the four colleges and universities in the Saugus city area.  Total enrollment in the higher education institutions is over 47,000 as of Fall 2000.
